This year our Advent Calendars were lovingly illustrated inhouse by our Graphic Lead, Beth. She’s taken a deep red and our iconic four-point stars and turned them into jewelry boxes to treasure. Keep reading to find out more about our Advent Calendars, and Beth’s cosmic design process.

We asked Beth a few questions about the Advent Calendars...

What inspired your illustrations?

With it being the 5th year of the A&M Advent Calendars, we wanted it to be the biggest & boldest year yet. We took a lot of inspiration from the resurgence of bold, graphic, repeating patterns, and found that using our iconic four-point star to create our very own print put the perfect A&M stamp on the trend. The stars are a nod to our love for all things cosmic (as well as the cosmic jewels inside the 24 Day calendar), whilst the bold red really leans into the festive season. 

Can you tell us a little about your design process?

Once we'd decided on an overall look and feel for the suite, I worked alongside the Product Team to create a range of iterations of how each calendar could look. We decided on the shape & size of the boxes, the materials we'd use, and their functionality. This year we kept the design of our 24 day and Solid Gold Advent Calendars pretty paired-back. We focused on choosing the right materials to create long-lasting, treasurable jewelry boxes you'd want to keep using year after year. Tying in the crackers and baubles by using the same colours and print really helped bring the full collection together, leaving it feeling as luxe, cohesive and festive as we'd imagined. 

How did the designs change from sketch to final illustration?

I always find it interesting to look back at our initial concepts once we have the final products in our hands, to see which elements did and didn't make the cut! To be honest, we landed on the four-point star as a repeating pattern pretty quickly, and when it transferred perfectly onto the other items in the gifting suite, like our crackers and festive gift wrap, we were sold. Though we did add some textural elements like gold foiling to really bring the print to life - and add another seasonal touch.
